Event Details
On October 4th, 2024 it was announced that the Province of Manitoba and Government of Canada provided funding for the Red Dress Alert pilot. Gigananwenimaanaanig (through Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre) received funding to help with outreach, education, and community involvement. These groups helped to ensure that the program was implemented with a focus on supporting affected families and building trust with the Indigenous communities in Winnipeg.
As part of the pilot, the Gigananwenimaanaanig Red Dress Project Team has hired a team to coordinate consultations in urban and remote locations. There will be 6 consultations held in Winnipeg that include several sessions for impacted families, Indigenous Community, service providers, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ folks.
Join the consultation on February 27th, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at 90 Sinclair St, Winnipeg.
Light lunch will be provided*
Background: The Red Dress Alert is a public safety initiative aimed at raising awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ (MMIWG2S+) in Canada. It was inspired by the Red Dress Project, to highlight the disproportionate number of Indigenous women and girls who go missing or are murdered, and to honor their lives. The Red Dress Alert, similar to Amber Alerts, notifies the public about missing Indigenous women and girls, urging national attention and public involvement in locating them
