Lunch & Learn: Ready Winnipeg – Emergency Preparedness

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Management Office (EMO) is presenting Ready Winnipeg – Emergency Preparedness.

Many emergency events disproportionately affect vulnerable groups in our city, including newcomers. They may not be aware of the hazards that Winnipeg faces, or how to prepare for potential disasters or emergencies. The presentation will include information about a variety of different hazards and emergencies Winnipeg and the surrounding community may face, including:

• Dangerous weather conditions, such as extreme cold and heat, tornados, wind storms, snow storms, and heavy rainfall.
• Floods, power outages, train derailments, fires, and building closures.

Attendees will explore simple ways to help newcomers prepare for emergencies. They will also learn strategies to help people stay safe in the moments leading up to, and throughout, an emergency response.

Objectives:

1. To empower settlement staff to help their newcomer clients prepare for emergencies and disasters in Winnipeg by providing tools and resources.
2. To provide a safe space for questions and learning opportunities.
3. To normalize the uncertainty surrounding emergency preparedness, and help attendees feel confident sharing this critical information within their communities.

Who should attend? 

This workshop is intended for frontline settlement staff working directly with the newcomer population.

Facilitator Bios

Andrew Ward:

Andrew is a lead with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Emergency Social Services Team. As a social service provider for 25 years, Andrew has primarily worked in Winnipeg’s inner-city neighborhoods with street-entrenched adults and youth focusing on harm-reduction, building personal capacity and resiliency, as well as emergency prevention and preparedness. Andrew is a provincially licensed Primary Care Paramedic and IFSAC Certified Firefighter. He also has a B.A. in Theatre and Psychology from the University of Winnipeg.”

Tamra Irwin:

Tamra has spent 15 years supporting vulnerable communities in various capacities throughout the course of her career. Highlights include working as a Program Facilitator at the Manitoba Youth Centre, creating and facilitating a 9-week education and training curriculum geared towards empowering youth to gain and maintain employment at Resource Assistance for Youth, and working as a Counsellor at North End Women's Centre. Within her current role on the Office of Emergency Management's Emergency Social Service team, she values most being able to meet people where they are at in times of crisis. Overall else, Tamra looks for opportunities to build relationships and connections and works hard to provide a safe space for people to tell their story.
