Flexology: Teaching Accommodations for Every and One

11 Apr 2023
9:00am - 12:00pm CDT

International aid and disability rights groups report anywhere from 10-20% of the global population lives with some sort of disability. This statistical reality means that in your class of 20 students, you will have 1-4 who need support or accommodation in order to access your class. Sadly, very few TESL programs give us training in recognizing and accommodating barriers in the classroom. In this session, we aim to take some primary steps at addressing that gap in knowledge. Come, learn, and discuss various challenges your learners have encountered and science-backed methods on how you can help them succeed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

  • Recognize behaviours that are indicative of deeper issues in learning
  • Recognize the difference between typical language acquisition challenges and those that might indicate a true learning challenge
  • Have a list of possible adaptations and ideas to support learners who have  challenges in their classrooms

AGENDA

  1. Learning to recognize behaviours and patterns that are indicative of deeper learning challenges.
  2. Break
  3. Discussion: science-backed accommodations, tips, and techniques to support each of the previously mentioned challenges.
  4. Resource sharing
