Conflict is a normal part of any work place, and staff of newcomer serving organizations encounter conflict in working with partners, clients and coworkers.

This workshop will highlight the importance of de-escalation, how to recognize a potential conflict and how to take safe and appropriate actions. Participants will be engaged with discussion and activities to foster an understanding of de-escalation techniques.

Target Audience:  This workshop is appropriate for frontline settlement staff with <5 years of experience.  More senior staff who would like a refresher / update are also welcome.

Outcomes:

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the dynamics of conflict
  • Expand understanding of the impacts of privilege and power
  • Understand how to prevent a conflict from escalating
  • Understand anger
  • Practice techniques for de-escalation

Facilitators:

Karen Ridd: workshop facilitator, mediator, teacher and pubic speaker with over 25 years experience, as a conflict resolution practitioner will lead us throughout the day.  Karen has developed and delivered workshops globally and has a passion for social justice.

Angela Lavallee: workshop co-facilitator, student at University of Winnipeg studying conflict resolution and criminal justice.  Angela is a mother and grandmother who’s experienced many forms of violence.  She volunteers to support families ‘battling the cycle of violence’.
