Assisting Refugee Claimants: A Workshop for Shelter Workers and Community Helpers in Winnipeg

Event Description: 

Shelters and community agencies in Winnipeg are seeing increasing numbers of refugee claimants accessing supports and services recently. This training, developed by Healthy Muslim Families, with the support of Manitoba Association of Newcomer Serving Organizations (MANSO), is designed to help shelter workers and other front line community workers learn more about refugee claimants, the claim process, and where to refer claimants for services, including legal, housing, settlement and language supports. The training will cover the following topics: 

  • Understanding Refugee Terminology
  • Myth Busting
  • Understanding the Refugee Claim Process
  • What happens after applying, including timelines
  • Understanding Work Permits, Housing, EIA for Refugee Claimants
  • Available Resources

There will be time to address questions that you may have about refugee claimants, and newcomer services more broadly.

This training will be held in person in the Sanctuary at the Salvation Army Centre of Hope at 180 Henry St in Winnipeg.
