West Central Women's Resource Centre - Settlement Services
About West Central Women's Resource Centre - Settlement Services
The West Central Women's Resource Centre WCWRC started in 1999 as a 3-year project (Women’s Empowerment Project) in response to the high number of women in our neighbourhood living in poverty. Since that time the Centre has grown to offer a variety of support and services to the whole community. The Centre has always been guided and informed by women living in our neighbourhood - the West Central community in Winnipeg.
Products & Services
West Central Women’s Resource Centre provides settlement services to vulnerable newcomers living in the West Central Community. Our Settlement Workers assist newcomers by providing information, referrals and support in order to help them increase access to community and government services and build capacity to navigate Canadian systems (learning English or French, housing, child care, education, transportation, health, recreation, important documents, and more).
We also offer 1-1 employment support, workshops and trainings to support newcomer women gain employment. In addition, we have a Gender-based Violence caseworker who works with newcomer women experiencing barriers accessing social services, shelters, legal aid while raising awareness about their rights and responsibilities when dealing with gender-based violence.
Our Healing Together: Fostering Safe, Strong Families program aims to enhance newcomer well-being with an emphasis on preventing and healing from intimate partner violence (IPV) and experiences of post conflict gender based violence. This program supports women who are permanent residents through 1-1 counseling and a 10-week women’s wellness group that considers the cultural diversity and specific needs of newcomer women.
