About Manitoba School Improvement Program - The Peaceful Village Program Inc

The Peaceful Village Program, which began in 2009, is an educational process facilitated by the Manitoba School Improvement Program as an embodiment of its mission in action. The Peaceful Village Program is centered in a human rights and social justice framework.

Goals of Peaceful Village Program:

  • Providing educational assistance to youth (academic assessment and tutoring) to strengthen their English language, literacy, numeracy, and other academic skills

  • Facilitating increased access to high education through the provision of scholarships which are contingent upon school and Peaceful Village attendance, as well academic achievement.

  • Promoting positive social connections by providing a safe place for youth to learn together, as well as programming to assist them transitioning to Canadian society

  • Assisting the families of youth in developing a sense of belonging in Canadian society by providing English language instruction to parents of program participants as well by hosting community events (such as Village Kitchens) .

  • Facilitating the strengthening of positive mental health among youth by providing opportunities for youth to explore their talents (through passion projects).

  • Facilitating community movement toward universal safety via embracing of cultural diversity by educating the community about The Peaceful Village programming and its value to the community.

  • Providing opportunities for youth to develop self-efficacy, self-esteem and leadership skills

Products & Services

The Peaceful Village is an afterschool program for newcomer youth and their families, which is facilitated by Manitoba School Improvement Program (MSIP). The Peaceful Village operates Monday to Friday for three hours a day providing students with academic support, learning materials, snack, and other activities to engage with. There are also optional activities for students during PD days and school breaks The Peaceful Village also operates during the summer to provide activities and opportunities in activity based learning over the break. 

The Peaceful Village currently operates sites at six locations.  (Note please check with the community site on current status of programs due to COVID-19).

  • Glenlawn Collegiate
  • Fort Richmond Collegiate & Acadia Junior High
  • St. James Collegiate & George Waters Middle School

In addition to the afterschool program, the Peaceful Village runs language and/or citizenship classes for adults.  

Programs are free for youth, particularly newcomer youth from age 12 and their families.
