About Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata - EmpowerMEN program

We engage community to prevent sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of women, girls and 2SLGBTQ + individuals. We activate individual men and communities through education, online engagement, law enforcement, support services and research to challenge the cultural norms of sexual exploitation. We believe that men play a crucial role in this work to promote the health of our communities.

Educating and engaging newcomer communities in human trafficking and sexual exploitation prevention is vital because these populations often face heightened vulnerability due to language barriers, limited social networks, unfamiliarity with Canadian laws, and economic hardship. These factors can make them targets for traffickers who exploit isolation and lack of awareness. Prevention education helps newcomers recognize signs of exploitation, understand their rights, and know where to seek help, empowering them to protect themselves and others.

Equally important is addressing the role of demand that can be unintentionally perpetuated by some immigrants due to a lack of understanding of Canadian laws and norms. In Canada, sex work laws are complex and differ significantly from those in other countries. Without proper education, some may contribute to demand for sexual services in ways that violate Canadian law.

By providing culturally sensitive, multilingual education and outreach, communities can reduce both victimization and unintentional harm. This approach not only protects individuals but also strengthens community resilience and promotes safer, more informed participation in Canadian society.
