Healthy Start
About Healthy Start
Healthy Start is a Winnipeg-based charity that offers weekly pregnancy and parenting groups nestled in ten community locations largely in the inner-city. Year round, we reach isolated, resilient families who want to learn about having and nurturing a healthy baby.
Our focus is delivering nutrition, health and parenting information in a practical, interactive style in teams that include public health nurses, dietitians and outreach workers. Individuals and families choose to come to our groups, where they can learn within a comfortable and interactive environment. There are no waiting lists, no cost and no start and end dates for sessions, and families can attend until their baby is a year old.
We provide practical support through:
- Coupons for free milk & eggs
- Healthy snacks and snack preparation demonstrations
- Meal bags (recipe & ingredients to cook a meal for 4 – 6 people)
- Prenatal and infant nutrition information
- Infant development
- Childminding on site for children aged 1 to 5 (volunteer childminders)
- Prenatal vitamins and vitamin D for babies
- We also offer one-on-one support to families who need help connecting to with other services.
We have one group specifically for newcomers to Canada. We offer interpreting (as much as possible) in the language required by the participant. This is the only group where we have PowerPoint presentations in order to meet the needs of newcomer participants.
As an organization, we celebrate 29 years of serving pregnant and parenting families; we opened our first group in January of 1997.
