A & O: Support Services for Older Adults is a not-for-profit organization that provides specialized services for older Manitobans across the province. The goal of these programs is to empower and support older adults in the community.
Products & Services
Senior Immigrant Settlement Services
Settlement Orientation for Seniors
The program offers a group settlement orientation for newcomers who are 55 years of age or older. After completing the settlement orientation, participants are referred to WELARC for a language assessment.
English Language Program (ELP) for Seniors
An opportunity for older adults to:
*Learn English needed to do everyday tasks such as going to the doctor, shopping, banking etc.
*Connect with other older adults in their community.
*Learn about programs and services for older adults in Winnipeg.
Levels CLB 3-4.
Classes are three times per week for two hours
Two locations in Winnipeg
English Conversation Classes for Seniors
An opportunity for older adults to:
*Practice their English skills
*Meet other older adults from their community and around the world
*Learn more about programs and services for older adults in Winnipeg
Settlement Worker provides:
*Information about community programs and services
*Assistance connecting with programs and services for older adults
*Help with forms and documents
*Opportunities to connect with older adults in the community
COUNSELLING
A range of counselling services are available for older adults. Some of the services available address loneliness, death of a family member, loss of health and adult child, grandchild/aging parent relationships
ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION SERVICES
At A & O: Support Service for Older Adults, Social Workers respond to the needs of individuals 55+ who are experiencing neglect, emotional, financial, sexual or physical abuse. Information and resources are provided to family and friends who may be concerned about an older adult. All calls are strictly confidential.
SAFE SUITE PROGRAM
This program provides temporary housing for men, women and couples, 55 years or older who are in need of a safe place to stay due to abuse or neglect and whose needs cannot be effectively met by existing abuse/crisis services. Abuse may be physical, emotional/psychological, sexual, financial or neglect.
HOUSING
A & O: Support Services for Older Adults' Housing Program and related services are evolving to suit the needs of older adults. One-on-one consultations with the Housing Project Coordinator are available by appointment. The Coordinator will provide clients with information to assist them with the selection of an appropriate housing option. A & O publishes the Winnipeg Housing Directory for Older Adults that contains information on housing for older adults in Winnipeg. The directory includes information on Independent Living, Life Leasing, Assisted Living, Companion Care, Supportive Housing, Intermediate Personal Care and Personal Care Homes.
