Claiming Refugee Protection in Canada

In partnership with Community Legal Education Association (CLEA), MANSO is pleased to provide information sessions on Claiming Refugee Protection in Canada. Nalini Reddy, our guest speaker and immigration lawyer, will provide an overview of the refugee claim process. 

The session will cover topics such as how to make a refugee claim, the steps involved, the difference between claiming at a port of entry and claiming inland, refugee hearings and preparation, procedures for submitting the Basis of Claim (BOC) form, compliance with Refugee Protection Division (RPD) rules, work permits, and more.

 

Learning objectives:  

 

  1. Understand the Refugee Claim Process in Canada, including key steps and requirements.

  2. Identify the differences between making a refugee claim at a port of entry versus making one inland.

  3. Prepare for Refugee Hearings: Understand the requirements and procedures for refugee hearings, including key preparation steps.

  4. Learn how to properly complete and submit the Basis of Claim (BOC) form as part of the claim process.

  5. Become familiar with the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) rules and guidelines that govern the refugee claim process.

  6. Gain insight into eligibility and application procedures for obtaining and renewing a work permit during the refugee claim process.

 

 

Who should attend?  This workshop is recommended for any front-line staff, middle management or directors of newcomer serving organizations, as well as anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of claiming refugee status in Canada. 

 

NOTE: The presenter will not be able to provide information, or advice, on specific cases.

 

Speaker bio:

Nalini Reddy practices Immigration Law and assists non-Canadians with immigration, refugee matters, and citizenship and was named to the 2021, 2022 and 2023 editions of the Best Lawyers in Canada for Immigration Law.

Nalini practiced immigration and refugee law at the Federal Department of Justice in Winnipeg law for 18 years prior to leaving the government in order to do something she had always wanted to do as a lawyer: assist non-Canadians with immigration, refugee matters, and citizenship. Nalini has appeared in the Federal Court on countless immigration and refugee judicial reviews, as well as before the Federal and Manitoba Courts of Appeal and the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Nalini currently chairs the Immigration Section of the Manitoba Bar Association and has presented at the Canadian Bar Association’s national annual Immigration and Citizenship conference and for the Law Society of Manitoba and Manitoba Bar Association.
